OU at Maths Week Scotland: Magic Maths/ Is it Magic or is it Maths?

Online (Zoom) 24th Sep 10.00am-11.00am Free

Magic tricks to amaze your friends and family! Discover the mathematics behind solving some fun problems with Open University academics Charlotte Lighter and Kellee Patterson.

In this interactive session Charlotte and Kellee will share with you some magic tricks you can use to amaze your friends and family. But is it really magic or is it maths? The real trick here is in understanding the maths behind the magic.

We will work with you to challenge the idea that mathematics is impossible or that it aims to trick you! Charlotte and Kellee will reveal the maths behind the mystery through exploring and undoing the underlying mathematics which makes these tricks possible, from looking at the structure of number to probability.

The event will take place using Zoom. A link will be provided by email by the event organiser. Suggested age suitability: 9 - 12 years old (P5 - P7).

The Open Universitys events for Maths Week Scotland are taking place free online, between 24 - 26 September 2024. See our OU in Scotland events webpage.

There is a range of free learning about Maths on the OU's free learning site, OpenLearn, such as Everyday Maths.
