The countdown is on to Maths Week Scotland 2020!

The Countdown is On Featured 01 01

With just under two weeks to go, people all over Scotland are preparing for Maths Week Scotland 2020 which will take place from 28 September – 4 October this year.

Maths Week Scotland is an annual week of events and activity which aims to highlight and showcase the importance of maths in our everyday lives and careers. From cooking the dinner to what art we enjoy and the music we listen to, maths is all around us.

This year, Maths Week Scotland events will be more accessible than ever as we follow the shift to online as so many of us have experienced in 2020. This means that more people will be able to attend and take part in inspirational events, no matter where they are in the country.

On Monday the 28th, the week will be kicked off by an online webinar with world-renowned Oxford professor Marcus du Sautoy, hosted by Herriot-Watt University. We’ll be exploring Marcus’ latest book: The Creativity Code, and discover how computer algorithms could soon help improve our imagination and creativity. Definitely not one to miss!

There will be interesting workshops for schools to attend throughout the week. Tuesday 29th will see Maths Inspiration, a bumper event with an incredible line up of mathematicians who will host puzzles, quizzes and not forgetting an opportunity for schools to win a fantastic prize.

The fun doesn’t stop at the end of the working week. Moving into the weekend, children aged 7-14 and their families are invited to join staff and students from the University of Edinburgh at the Virtual Maths Circle. In this exciting and interactive event, we will solve maths problems and puzzles together. Families can also continue to enjoy plenty of maths activities right into the weekend with the help of our activity bank here: mathsweek.scot/activities

For the full line-up, visit mathsweek.scot/events.

Deputy First Minister, John Sweeney, will also be bringing back his daily challenges, so make sure to set a reminder and keep an eye on social media every morning during the week!

But that’s not all. Teachers and pupils will be celebrating Maths Week Scotland in schools up and down the country through events and activities in school. As well as this, schools can put their knowledge to the test and take part in this year’s Maths Week Scotland challenges. If you haven’t already, make sure you pin your school on the map and become an official Maths Week Scotland school in 2020!

We’re looking forward to another packed week of activities, myth-busting, inspiration but most importantly, fun! Whether you’re at home, in school or part of a community group, there are ways for everyone to get involved, and we have plenty of ideas and inspiration to help you get started.
