OU at Maths Week Scotland: Magic Maths/ Is it Magic or is it Maths?

Online 25th Sep 10.00am-10.45am Free

Magic tricks to amaze your friends and family! Discover the mathematics behind solving some fun problems with Open University (OU) academics Charlotte Lighter and Rebecca Rosenburg.

In this interactive session Charlotte and Rebecca will share with you some magic tricks you can use to amaze your friends and family. But is it really magic or is it maths? The real trick here is in understanding the maths behind the ‘magic’.

We will work with you to challenge the idea that mathematics is impossible or that it aims to trick you! Charlotte and Rebecca will reveal the maths behind the mystery through exploring and “undoing” the underlying mathematics which makes these tricks possible, from looking at the structure of number to probability.

Suggested age suitability: 11 – 12 years old (S1).  However, also suitable for many learners at P7.

Platform: The event will take place using Zoom. A link will be provided by email by the event organiser. Please register your interest 24 hours in advance of the session to ensure you receive the link in time.
