Maths Week 2025: Wild Maths

Wild Maths Header

We're delighted to announce Maths Week Scotland will be back for 2025!

Maths Week Scotland will take place 22 September - 28 September 2025 and the theme will be Wild Maths. Bringing nature and numbers together, Wild Maths will explore plants and wildlife, weather and natural forces, astronomy, outdoor learning, and so much more!

Get creative and come up with your own way to celebrate Wild Maths or take inspiration from some of our suggestions below:

Mapping the Move: Animal Adventures

This Maths Week Scotland, dive into the fascinating maths behind animal migrations! Challenge your class to map out the journeys of whales, birds, and butterflies by plotting distances, tracking paths and calculating average speeds, total distances, and coordinates.

Which animals migrate within Scotland? How far do the ones visiting Scotland travel to get here?

Nature's Perfect Patterns

Uncover the mesmerizing world of fractals this Maths Week Scotland!

From the delicate branches of fern leaves to the intricate patterns of snowflakes and the jagged beauty of lightening, fractals are everywhere in nature!

Encourage your class to get creative by designing their own fractals and explore how these repeating patterns are used to model real-life structures, such as the design of antennas in technology!

Home Sweet Geometry

Explore how animals use geometric shapes to build their homes, from the hexagons in beehives to the spheres in bird nests and the tunnels in ant colonies.

Have learners design their own ‘wildlife habitats’ using 3D shapes, learning how geometry helps animals create efficient and functional homes.

Forecasting Fun

Dive into the numbers behind the weather! Get your learners to measure and analyse patterns in temperature, rainfall, or wind speed using basic statistics and probability. By tracking data and spotting trends, they can make their own weather predictions and explore how maths helps us understand the climate.

Maths in the Outdoor World

There are so many fun ways to take maths beyond the classroom and into the great outdoors! This year, why not try a Shape Scavenger Hunt? Head outside and see how many different shapes you can spot.

Our website is full of outdoor maths activities, including 30 Days Wild - a calendar featuring ideas like finding Fibonacci, mini beast surveys, sorting sticks, and more.

Another fantastic way to bring maths to life and step outside the classroom is by creating a maths trail around your school or local area. You could even take it further by involving the wider community! It’s a brilliant way to make maths more engaging while encouraging parents and families to join in the fun of learning together.

You’ll also find a variety of outdoor maths games - why not take your class outside for Hyena Chase or Wonky Hopscotch?
