New Story: Finn Finity and the Wild Maths Zoo Adventure

Zoo Adventure News Header

We are very excited to share with you the latest story about our 'mathscot' Finn Finity, in collaboration with Edinburgh Zoo. Finn Finity and the Wild Maths Zoo Adventure is an interactive story that you can read together with your class or as a family. It incorporates maths puzzles and activities, that you solve as you read. If you complete the story, the final puzzle lets you 'unlock' a hidden webpage where you can download a small reward.

Who is it for?

Schools, home learners, families and individuals who enjoy storytelling and puzzles. Best suited for P3/P4 to P7, but if you are taking part as a family with a mixed age group, older and younger family members can help each other solve the puzzles together. A Teacher's Pack is available for schools, with additional supporting resources.

How does it work?

There are 5 chapters in total, plus a short epilogue. Read each chapter, then solve the accompanying puzzle for that chapter. Chapter 3 is a drawing task which includes a template that works best if printed out, the rest can be done without printing though you will need something to write with. Solutions to all puzzles are included.

Do I need to visit Edinburgh Zoo?

The story can be completed from anywhere in Scotland, you don't need to visit the Zoo in person. However, for local families visiting Edinburgh Zoo, we have created a special version to take around the Zoo with you if you would like to follow in Finn Finity's footsteps in real time. Download the relevant resources below!

Downloads: Remote Version

Includes full colour story with images and puzzles for each chapter, with two levels of difficulty to choose from. Plus a Teachers Pack with additional supporting resources, including teachers notes, a slideshow, and additional high res images for whiteboards.

Downloads: In-person Version

The in-person version is broken down into individual chapters, with simplified versions of the puzzles already incorporated, to make it easier to open on a mobile device whilst going around Edinburgh Zoo. Puzzle solutions are included separately, to either check on site or once you get home.

Optional Extras:

Our map has the five stops in the story already marked on it, but you can also pick up a map at the Zoo and find the relevant enclosures on that.

The Animal Face File gives some additional maths related facts about all the animals featured in the story. You can read this at home.

Finn Finity and the Wild Maths Zoo Adventure was developed by Maths Week Scotland, in collaboration with Edinburgh Zoo.
