New 'Wild Maths' Activity Booklet
We are delighted to share one of this years Maths Week Scotland Large Grant projects. Dumfries and Galloway Outdoor and Woodland Learning Group (DGOWL) received a grant to deliver outdoor learning sessions with Level 2 learners across the local authority.
This included Primary School Level 2 learners, who were identified as "the ones who need outdoor maths the most as they become increasingly screen-bound" following a previous project with Level 1 learners; as well as Secondary School settings with ASL units, working with the young people there to get them outside and build their enthusiasm about maths at a level appropriate to them. In total, 921 participants took part in the sessions, including learners as well as family members.
As part of the sessions, DGOWL developed a new Wild Maths booklet, packed with games and activities to help families engage with maths outdoors together. The activities are suitable for both Level 2 as well as Level 1 learners, and you can now download your own free digital copy right here!
The 20-page booklet includes a wide range of activities, such as:
- Tree Hunt
- Human Sun Dial
- Cloud Spotting
- Animal Weights
- Symmetrical Flower
- Leaf Bunting
- Dig Like a Mole
- Stick Balancing
- Find the Birdie
- And more!
Each activity includes a detailed description and step-by-step instructions, for families to explore and learn together, and parents to support their children with confidence.
Families with younger children may also want to check out DGOWL's previous booklet called Taking Maths Outdoors with your Child, which is aimed at parents of early years children and can be found on the DGOWL website.
As well as the Maths Week Scotland Grant Fund, the DGOWL project is supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council (DGC), DG College and University of Glasgow (Dumfries Campus).
