Learning Resources

What is Money? Video Learning Resource

Bring maths to life and build a deeper understanding of money with this hands‑on, curiosity‑driven video resource from Museum on the Mound.

Designed for learners aged 7–11, the resource supports pupils in developing and applying their investigative and numeracy skills through the fascinating real‑world context of money.

Handling materials included with the free resource make learning more engaging, meaningful and fun by giving pupils real objects to compare, test, measure and explore.

What’s in the video?

The video guides learners through:

  • Different types of money used across the world and through time, encouraging comparison, classification, and estimation.
  • Why materials matter, prompting learners to test strength, durability, and other measurable properties.
  • A design‑your‑own‑currency challenge. Teachers can post these designs to the Museum, where they are transformed into wearable money badges for pupils to keep

How to book

Everything is completely free for UK groups.

  1. Complete this short Microsoft Form
  2. We’ll post your handling pack directly to you.
  3. You’ll receive an email with the video link and guidance so you can deliver the session with confidence.

Workshops

Maths Money Marvels (online)

Museum on the Mound is excited to offer a free, hands-on, interactive digital workshop that brings money and maths to life.

Pupils will use their investigative, numeracy and measurement skills to explore the fascinating things people have used as money around the world.

Handling materials will be sent to you in advance to make the workshop as sensory and engaging as possible.

The workshop is best suited for children aged 8-11. It lasts approximately 30 minutes and can be adapted to meet the needs and interests of your class.

Schools can now choose between a live digital workshop delivered over Teams, or our new video learning resource that teachers can use anytime. Both cover the same exciting money and maths content, giving you the flexibility to pick the format that best suits your learners.

How to book

Please complete this short Microsoft Form or e-mail the museum at info@museumonthemound.com for more information.

Money Maths at Museum on the Mound (in person)

Museum on the Mound is excited to offer maths versions of their popular money-themed schools workshops. These are entirely free of charge. They are best suited for P5-P7 pupils but can be adapted for young people of all ages. The workshops have been designed to encourage pupils to think critically and creatively through exploration and discovery.

By participating in three hands-on activities, pupils will be able to apply their skills in a new context and build their confidence in using maths in real life situations. In What is Money? (also available as a free digital workshop), pupils will use their investigative, numeracy and measurement skills to explore different things people have used as money. In Heads and Tails, pupils will put their critical thinking skills to the test as they examine the design and security features of coins. In Kists and Keys, our collections, including £1,000,000, are used to spark conversation about value, some of the benefits and risks of using cards and how to keep money safe.

How to book

For further information and to make a booking, please e-mail the museum at info@museumonthemound.com. These workshops are available year round, but sessions are limited, so please book as early as possible.
