Scottish Football Association Maths Resources
For our 2023 theme Maths in Motion, Maths Week Scotland collaborated with the Scottish Football Association to highlight the impact of Maths & Numeracy on the world of football.
Maths concepts covered include:
- World of Work
- Number and number processes
- Data and analysis/ Information handling
- Time
- Money
- Estimation and rounding
- Fractions and percentages
- Measure
The resources are most suitable for Second Level and Third Level, but you are welcome to modify the activities to best suit your own ideas and learners.
Scottish Cup Goals
Estimate the number of goals scored in rounds of matches, place number of goals scored on a number line, create a pictograph of the goals scored by a selection of teams, work out the difference in goals between particular matches, and more!
Match Stats
This resource looks at the importance of match statistics and how this data can be used and analysed. Watch the short video in which Sports Science and Data Manager shares how Maths & Numeracy plays a big part in his job. Follow this up with one of the suggested Match Stats activities, such as placing the top goalscorer stats in correct order; watch extended match highlights and estimate elements of match stats before using official match stats to check their estimations; or learners collecting and displaying stats from their own games.
Match Itinerary
This resource looks at the importance of planning an itinerary for match day preparations. Watch the short video in which Women's Senior National Team Manager Lisa shares how Maths & Numeracy plays a big part in her job. Follow this up with one of the suggested Match Itinerary activities; such as change times from 24 hour to 12 hour clock notations; arrange schedules in chronological order; work out the timings of the schedule working back from finishing time; extend learning to time differences between countries; and more!
