Irn Bru Data Collection

Best suited for Second Level

Created by the Royal Statistical Society, this activity get learners thinking about how information is collected and introduces some simple approaches to visualise the data that they have collected.

Using a data collection app, students will be be introduced to bar charts, dot plots and pie charts. They can get creative and produce their own data visualisations to find out how their class really feels about Irn Bru.

Games about mathematicians

Best suited for Second Level

The Parent Council at Anderston Primary School have created a series of games about 7 amazing mathematicians, including Annie Easley, Katherine Johnson, Maryam Mirzakhani, Florence Nightingale, Chika Ofili, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and Wang Zhenyi.

Each game should take around 20 minutes to play and can be done using the free Escape Team app or simply solved on paper (although an adult will be needed to check the codes are correct!)

Roman Hackers

This resource are aimed at lower secondary pupils was created for Maths Week Scotland 2021, and helps learners explore the role of maths in the hacksilver discovered from the Roman empire.

Maths in Motion: DYW Online Talks

To celebrate Maths Week Scotland 2023, DYW Live held a day of live webinars on the theme of 'maths in motion', featuring:

  • Professor of Mathematics talking about their journey to becoming a STEM Ambassador.
  • Stream Marine Careers talking about the maths required to work at sea sailing on ships and boats.
  • Firstbus explaining how maths is core to their business from ticket prices to timetabling to how many buses and drivers they need.
  • A consultant for the energy sector will explain how maths is crucial to her work.

Dance Like a Robot

Best suited for Early, First & Second Level

Join Rusy the Robot from the NumBots, and learn some robot dance moves to practice subitising, number bonds, double/half and one/two more/less. The resource combines movement with teacher-to-pupil interactions. The teacher can put the resource on the board (one slide for each activity) and follow the steps to do an activity together.

Shape Mice

Celebrate Burns Night with this shape activity, in honour of one of Robert Burns' most well known poems, 'To a Mouse'. Cut out shapes of different sizes from coloured paper or card, and arrange them to create mice. What other shapes can you use? How about a pentagon or a hexagon mouse?
