Maths Week Scotland isn’t just for schools and families – home learners can get involved too! With a wide range of resources, activities, and events designed to make maths fun and engaging, there’s plenty on offer to support learning at home.

Competitions

Some of the Maths Week Scotland competitions are aimed at school classes to complete as a group, but several of our competitions requiring individual entries are also open to home learners.

  • Finn's Wild Maths Adventure Contest - for learners at Early Years level (P1 and pre-school). Closes 3rd October.
  • Maths Tales Story Writing Contest - for learners at First & Second level (P2 - P7). Closes 3rd October.
  • Fibonacci Poetry Contest - for learners at Secondary School levels. Closes 3rd October.
  • Graph Craft - for learners aged 11 to 16. Closes 10th October.

Daily Challenge

Each morning during Maths Week Scotland, a new puzzle set by the Scottish Mathematical Council will be shared on BBC Bitesize. These are open to anyone.

Suitable for learners at upper primary/ early secondary level.

Events

We have a series of online events that are aimed at schools, but also open to home learners. You can take part from anywhere in Scotland, some require access to Microsoft Teams.

Online events suitable for home learners include:

  • Interactive Adventure Book Event with SuperQuesters. For age 5 to 10 (Tues 23 Sept) - via Microsoft Teams
  • Online talks with DYW Live about maths in Nature. For learners at P5 to P7 level (Weds 24 Sept) - via Microsoft Teams
  • The Hidden Herbarium online workshop with Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. For learners at P4 to P7 level (Weds 24 Sept) - via Microsoft Teams
  • Becoming an Actuary interactive masterclass with Heriot-Watt University. For learners age 16+ (Weds 24 Sept)
  • Magic Maths: is it magic or is it maths? interactive session with the Open University. For age 11 to 12 (Thurs 25 Sept) - via Zoom
  • Defend the Rhino with Maths and AI, with Digital Skills Education. For learners at P5 to P7 level (Fri 26 Sept) - via YouTube
  • The Curse of the Burial Dagger online puzzle mystery. For age 11+ (available all year round)

The online events are free, but require registration.

We also have several in-person events happening across the country in various locations. Many of the school events are aimed at groups, but some self-led activities activities are also suitable for home learners.
