Maths Week 2025: Wild Maths

We've rounded up this year's Maths Week Scotland events for schools in a handy, day-by-day overview. The programme is a mix of mix of both online and in-person events.

We took our 'Maths Tales' to the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Read all about the creative maths inspired poems written by students at the Teen Takeover Day.

We have another fun maths game to share with you today. Sim is a pen & paper game for two players. It's named after cryptographer and mathematician Gustavus Simmons, who first introduced the game in 1969.

Today we have a really simple game to share with you, that can be played at home, on the go, or in the classroom. The game encourages multiplication and addition skills, and also requires some strategic thinking and considering the probability of what numbers you are going to roll.

We love a good dice game! If you travel with some dice in your pocket, you'll never be bored, there's so much you can do with them. Today's game Threes Away requires five dice - you'll also need to think strategically, and it encourages number recognition too.

With the summer holidays looming, we've put together a selection of seasonal summer puzzles covering a range of different maths skills including counting, pattern recognition, logical thinking and code breaking. They're perfect for some end of term fun at school or as a boredom buster during the holidays.

Celebrate the UEFA European Football Championship 2024 with our maths in football facts and activities, including interactive videos and a quiz!

Glasgow Science Festival kicks off tomorrow (6 - 16 June 2024), with the theme "Glasgow's Transforming". We've had a browse through the programme, and picked out some of our favourite events.

We have pulled together all the 'Maths at Work' related activities from our past Activity Packs, to make it easier for you to access this content which can be reused year after year. The compilation packs align with the levels of the Scottish curriculum.

It's Spring in Edinburgh means, which means the return of the Edinburgh Science Festival (30 March - 14 April)! This years theme is Shaping the Future, and we've browsed through the programme to pick out some of our maths highlights for you.

To mark World Meteorological Day (23 March), we are delighted to share a guest post from Professor Sylvia Knight, Head of Education at the Royal Meteorological Society, to introduce their new Climate Change Concept tool and show how teachers can use it to support maths in the curriculum.

In January, we launched a competition and invited children from across Scotland to design a mascot for us. We are delighted to announce the winners, and to introduce you to our new 'Mathscot'!

Our theme this year is Maths Tales, so for World Book Day we are showing you how to fold an origami bookmark.
